The Foods I Crave When Summer Starts

Just like soup in the winter, certain foods signal the start of summer for me.

When our kids lived at home, we often went camping over Memorial Day weekend. Most of those memories center on spending time in the community bathrooms to stay safe during a rainstorm accompanied with tornado warnings. I remember desperately trying to grill shrimp in the rain one year.

Nowadays, we celebrate with a backyard swimming party, lots of games, and the foods we crave most when summer starts.

Deviled Eggs Without Mustard (Sweet & Simple!)

I’m celebrating the drop in egg prices by making deviled eggs again. Finally. 😄 This is a kid-friendly recipe and you can make them a day ahead. Of course, you can add mustard if you want more of a kick in flavor.

Multigrain Burger Buns (Bread Machine Dough)

Hearty, seedy, and sturdy with a soft texture you won't find in most store-bought buns.

Calabacitas Recipe with Potatoes, Corn and Summer Squash

Full of fresh veggies, you'll love how light, flavorful, and versatile this recipe is. Vary the squash or add sliced okra or mushrooms for fun. Use the leftovers for vegetarian tacos.

Sesame Teriyaki Chicken Thighs

If you already have the grill going for burgers and hot dogs, these chicken thighs are an easy upgrade. Leftovers make a tasty protein addition for summer salads or homemade pizzas.

Blackberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream (Small Batch Recipe)

On my last trip to Aldi's, I noticed the blackberries were beautiful and cheap. So this is what we're having for dessert at our swim party. It's so-o-o good.

I'm looking forward to lots of ice cream and watermelon, along with grilled veggies and meat. I hope the weather cooperates...for both of us.

Warmly,

Paula

Here's what we're having for Mother's Day My husband has a tradition of ordering dinner in for our family Mother's Day celebration after church. It's a nice break for all the mothers that doesn't require us to stand over a stove or in line at a restaurant. The party is at our house. Besides setting the table, my only job (self-appointed) is to make the desserts. Keep reading to see what's on the menu. Part 2 of the series: Why People Add Too Much Flour to Bread Dough Today's topic is: The Dough Should Stick (a Little) The dough looks sticky… so you add flour. Then more flour. Before you know it, you've got something that looks like playdough or a rubber ball. Last time we talked about why judging dough too early leads to adding too much flour. Today let’s talk about what properly hydrated dough actually looks like. If you've ever made one of my bread recipes, you've probably read this:...

Part 1 of the series: Why People Add Too Much Flour to Bread Dough Most of the time, people don’t add flour because the dough needs it—they add it because the dough looks wrong to them. Each week, I’ll share one common reason this happens. Today’s topic is #1: Judging the Dough Too Early. If you open your bread machine in the first 10–12 minutes of the kneading cycle, the dough will usually look rough and sticky. That’s normal. The gluten hasn’t developed yet. In other words, it’s not...
