The Foods I Crave When Summer Starts

Just like soup in the winter, certain foods signal the start of summer for me.

When our kids lived at home, we often went camping over Memorial Day weekend. Most of those memories center on spending time in the community bathrooms to stay safe during a rainstorm accompanied with tornado warnings. I remember desperately trying to grill shrimp in the rain one year.

Nowadays, we celebrate with a backyard swimming party, lots of games, and the foods we crave most when summer starts.

Deviled Eggs Without Mustard (Sweet & Simple!)

I’m celebrating the drop in egg prices by making deviled eggs again. Finally. 😄 This is a kid-friendly recipe and you can make them a day ahead. Of course, you can add mustard if you want more of a kick in flavor.

Multigrain Burger Buns (Bread Machine Dough)

Hearty, seedy, and sturdy with a soft texture you won't find in most store-bought buns.

Calabacitas Recipe with Potatoes, Corn and Summer Squash

Full of fresh veggies, you'll love how light, flavorful, and versatile this recipe is. Vary the squash or add sliced okra or mushrooms for fun. Use the leftovers for vegetarian tacos.

Sesame Teriyaki Chicken Thighs

If you already have the grill going for burgers and hot dogs, these chicken thighs are an easy upgrade. Leftovers make a tasty protein addition for summer salads or homemade pizzas.

Blackberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream (Small Batch Recipe)

On my last trip to Aldi's, I noticed the blackberries were beautiful and cheap. So this is what we're having for dessert at our swim party. It's so-o-o good.

I'm looking forward to lots of ice cream and watermelon, along with grilled veggies and meat. I hope the weather cooperates...for both of us.

Warmly,

Paula

Sliced white bread in a basket with butter on the side

WELCOME BREAD MACHINES YOGURT SALAD IN A JAR RECIPE INDEX It's hard to get in the mood to bake bread when the temperatures climb. On the other hand, if you're lucky enough to have fresh tomatoes, homemade bread takes a BLT to another level. So I keep baking—usually by turning the oven on early in the morning. While testing a new-to-me recipe yesterday, I ran into something I don't think I've ever talked about. The recipe was written in metric measurements (thankfully), but it also listed tiny...

straining yogurt with a handkerchief

WELCOME BREAD MACHINES YOGURT SALAD IN A JAR RECIPE INDEX A reader emailed me this week to say she strains yogurt with men's handkerchiefs. Not cheesecloth. Not coffee filters. Handkerchiefs. I've heard plenty of creative yogurt-making ideas over the years, but this was a new one. I have questions, of course. How much yogurt does she strain at one time? How large is her strainer? Is washing and drying the handkerchiefs significantly easier than using cheesecloth? Apparently, it works well for...

baked beans with sausage and hamburger in a black skillet with a wooden spoon

WELCOME BREAD MACHINES YOGURT SALAD IN A JAR RECIPE INDEX One thing I've learned about holiday meals is that people remember the favorites. You can add something new every year, but don't be surprised if someone asks, "Did you make the baked beans?" or "Where are the deviled eggs?" If you're planning a Fourth of July cookout, here are a couple of family traditions along with two more recipes that are always welcome at a summer gathering. Deviled Eggs Without Mustard (Sweet & Simple!) These...
