The Tiny Measuring Problem Nobody Talks About

It's hard to get in the mood to bake bread when the temperatures climb. On the other hand, if you're lucky enough to have fresh tomatoes, homemade bread takes a BLT to another level. So I keep baking—usually by turning the oven on early in the morning.

While testing a new-to-me recipe yesterday, I ran into something I don't think I've ever talked about. The recipe was written in metric measurements (thankfully), but it also listed tiny amounts of chopped rosemary and garlic in grams. Measuring 2 grams of fresh chopped rosemary accurately turned out to be harder than I expected.

That's one reason you won't always see metric measurements for very small amounts in my recipes. Most home kitchen scales are designed to weigh flour, butter, and other larger quantities—not a couple of grams of chopped herbs or minced garlic. For those tiny amounts, measuring spoons are usually the more accurate choice.
